Getting Your Mammogram
What Is A Mammogram?
A mammogram is a special x-ray of the breast to look for any problems within the breast.
How Is A Mammogram Done?
You will be asked to stand in front of a machine and to place your breast between two plastic plates. The plates will compress the breast for a more detailed image of the breast tissue.
Will A Mammogram Hurt?
You may experience some discomfort but should not have any pain. It is best to schedule your appointment for one week after your menstrual period or avoid times when breast tenderness is at its worst.
How Long Does It Take To Have A Mammogram?
The test itself should only take about 20 minutes if it is a screening mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram can include more detailed views or ultrasound depending on the extent of testing and may require up to two hours or more to complete.
Types Of Mammograms
Digital Screening Mammogram
This type of mammogram is done for women who have no symptoms of breast cancer.
Digital Diagnostic Mammogram
This type of mammogram is done when a lump or other symptoms are present.
Digital technology is used for all mammograms at Frye Regional Imaging Center.
3D Mammography
- 3D mammography is more effective in detecting breast cancer than traditional mammography and there are fewer call backs for additional testing associated with breast cancer.*
- 3D mammography is used for breast cancer screening to detect lumps, tumors and other abnormalities. It provides multiple X-ray images, which are compiled to make a 3D image.

Preparing For Your Mammogram
1. Notify your physician if you have breast implants when making the appointment.
2. Wear a shirt that is easily removed so you can undress from the waist up.
3. Don’t wear deodorant, 香水, lotion or powder under your arms or on your breasts the day of your appointment.
4. Arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment.
Key Steps For Successful Completion Of Your Mammogram
1. Make sure all previous mammogram films are provided to the facility prior to arriving for the test. If you have had mammograms at another facility, you should call ahead to have those films sent to the Frye Regional Imaging Center. If you have had mammograms at a local facility, you may bring the films with you.
2. Tell your doctor of any abnormal symptoms prior to scheduling your mammogram to ensure the correct test is ordered.
3. If you move out of town, please pick up your mammograms to take with you.
How Often Should I Have A Mammogram?
- It’s a good idea to start talking with your health care provider at age 40 about when you should begin screening. The American Cancer Society recommends women should have the choice to start screening with yearly mammograms as early as age 40.
- Women who have had cancer or problems may need to have them earlier and more frequently. It is important that you talk with your physician about the time that is right for you.
- Women with first degree relatives who have been diagnosed with breast cancer should begin having mammograms 10 years prior to their relative’s age at diagnosis.
